A former Community Health Systems executive has been tapped to lead Tennova Healthcare under its new owner Health Management Associates.

Michael W. Garfield, a veteran healthcare executive with more than 25 years of experience, has been named Division 1 vice president and Tennova Healthcare market CEO.

Garfield most recently served as a division vice president with Community Health Systems in Nashville overseeing 12 hospitals in the Midwest and upper Southeastern areas of the United States.

A native of Bristol, Garfield received a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, S.C. and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.

A former Community Health Systems executive has been named to lead Tennova Healthcare under its new owner, Florida-based Health Management Associates.

Michael W. Garfield, a veteran health care executive with more than 25 years of experience, was named division 1 vice president and Tennova Healthcare market CEO, effective immediately.

Garfield most recently served as a division vice president with Community Health Systems in Nashville, overseeing 12 hospitals in the Midwest and upper Southeastern areas of the United States.

In his new role, Garfield will oversee six hospitals and other health care facilities in the Tennova system.

“Mike’s experience and results embody the new and innovative thinking that will be the hallmark of Tennova’s approach to health care delivery. He will lead the growth of the Tennova system into the future, build upon its long-standing mission, and help it succeed as the leading provider of health care in the region,” Britt Reynolds, division 1 president for Health Management, wrote in a memo to employees.

During his career, Garfield has served as CEO of a multi-hospital system as well as CEO and COO of major tertiary facilities with HCA in Middle Tennessee.

A native of Bristol, Tenn., Garfield received a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Fresh from completing its acquisition of Mercy Health Partners in the Knoxville area, Health Management Associates has recruited Mike Garfield, a regional operations executive from Community Health Systems, to be its CEO in East Tennessee . Garfield, a native of Bristol, had joined CHS in 2009 after spending much of his career at HCA, where he was among other things CEO of Skyline Medical Center and COO of Centennial Medical Center.

Mr. Garfield, whose appointment is effective immediately, previously worked as division vice president at Community Health Systems in Nashville, Tenn. He has also served in executive level management roles with HCA throughout his tenure.

Tennova, formerly Mercy Health Partners, is now managed by Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates. HMA acquired Mercy Health Partners from Catholic Health Partners late last month.

Garfield will oversee Tennova’s seven hospitals located in Knox, Campbell, Cocke, Jefferson, and Scott Counties, numerous ancillary facilities and a large employed physician group with offices throughout East Tennessee.

On October 1, Florida-based Health Management Associates completed its acquisition of Mercy Health Partners and renamed the system Tennova Healthcare.

Garfield, 52, most recently worked as a division vice president with Community Health Systems, Franklin, Tenn., overseeing 12 hospitals in the Midwest and Southeast. Garfield also has worked for Nashville-based HCA as a CEO and COO of hospitals in Middle Tennessee.

Garfield earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Furman University, Greenville, S.C., and a master’s in healthcare administration from Tulane University in New Orleans.

NAPLES — Health Management Associates Inc. (symbol: HMA) completed its acquisition of the assets of Mercy Health Partners, a Knoxville, Tenn.-based firm with seven hospitals. HMA now operates 66 hospitals, with 10,400 licensed patient beds, through its various subsidiaries.

As part of the transaction’s closing, the Mercy system has been re-named Tennova Healthcare, a release explains.

HMA earned $150 million in profits on $5.1 billion in revenues in 2010. Gary Newsome is the company’s president and CEO. The company’s current stock price of roughly $6.75 per share is down more than 40% from its 52-week high of $11.74.

In August, the company’s stock price fell roughly 8% after officials disclosed that the company received two federal subpoenas requesting information on its hospital operations.

Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates’ acquisition of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Mercy Health Partners and its seven hospitals went into effect yesterday, and the Mercy system is now known as Tennova Healthcare, according to a HMA news release.

The deal was estimated to ring in at approximately $525 million. The seven-hospital Tennova was a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Catholic Health Partners.

Mercy’s new name, Tennova, translates to “new healthcare for Tennessee.”

Several hospitals and doctors office across East Tennessee will soon have new names on their doors.

Mercy Health partner’s new name is Tennova Healthcare after Health Management Associates closed on the deal to buy them. The company celebrated on Monday with an ice cream reception.

Six of the seven Mercy hospitals now have their names changed. As the new owner of Mercy, HMA said it will help the system grow financially and create a higher quality of care for everyone in the community.

“When we, as Health Management, enter into a marketplace, one of the things that we always have at the forefront is ‘How do we better this hospital for this community?’ That’s not separatist in any way, but that is really focused on those needs because that’s how these hospitals were founded, and that’s why they were founded,” said HMA Division President Britt T. Reynolds.

HMA said you will start seeing permanent new signs on the facilities they now own in the next several weeks.
